Non-Slip Mats

Safety should always be the top priority when furnishing a home. Accidents can occur easily from unstable furniture, slippery surfaces, or cluttered floors, making it essential to ensure that all elements are secure, including rugs. Many rugs lack protective underlays to keep them in place, and even when they have one, it may not be sufficient. Using additional safety measures is important, and non-slip mats provide an effective and affordable solution.

How do non-slip mats work?

Non-slip mats, or rug grippers, are usually made from a rubbery synthetic material that increases friction between the rug and the floor. This added grip helps keep the rug in place under everyday foot traffic. They are thin enough to prevent the rug from lifting too much, reducing the risk of tripping. For thin, flat-weave rugs, grippers also stop wrinkling and bunching, helping the rug stay smooth and last longer.

Can non-slip mats be cleaned easily without damaging the rubber backing?

Non-slip mats generally come in two types: those with washable materials and those that are not designed to be washed. For mats that cannot be washed, regular maintenance can keep them effective and safe. Shaking them outdoors or lightly vacuuming the surface helps remove dust and debris, while brushing the fibres upright ensures the backing maintains good contact with the floor.

What size rug mat should I get?

Your rug pad should be about 2–3 centimetres smaller than your rug on all sides, so if you have a 160 x 230cm rug, get a pad around 155 x 225cm. This keeps the pad hidden underneath so you won't see or trip over its edges. Most rug pads come in standard metric sizes, but can be easily trimmed with scissors if you need a more exact fit for your floor space.
